Ecobeauty launches a new cosmetic line with natural essential oils. We want to tell you a bit more about these oils – how they work and what they can do to improve our skin condition.

Essential oils work on different levels – via the sense of smell, absorption in our respiratory system or directly through the skin. The optimum way for the body to absorb the therapeutic qualities of essential oils is through a combination of inhalation and dermal absorption.

Smell

Even though the sense of smell in humans is much less developed than in most animals, it is linked to some of the oldest structures in our brain. When we inhale the aromas of essential oils, this triggers emotional and sometimes even physical reactions. That happens because of the activity of the nerve impulses that are sent to our limbic system, which has access to situational memories, people or places related to the perceived olfactory (smell) sensations.

Absorption in the respiratory system

Another way that aromatherapy works is via the inhalation and internal absorption of the essential oils. Their antimicrobial properties make them ideal for maintaining a healthy respiratory system – including the sinuses, throat and chest. Essential oils can also be very effective in relieving symptoms of infections and allergies.

Absorption through the skin

The lipophilic nature and small size of molecules in essential oils makes them perfect candidates for dermal absorption. Essential oils constituents travel through the epidermis (the top layer of skin) reaching the dermis (a deeper layer of skin) and then to the blood vessels. As soon as the constituents of essential oils enter the bloodstream they are carried to all areas of our body.

Most essential oils possess antibacterial properties, some can have anti-viral, anti-fungal or anti-inflammatory effects. They also contain antioxidants which help to prevent cell damage from external factors, thus helping reduce signs of ageing.

Because essential oils can penetrate into deep layers of the skin, they are very useful in cosmetic formulations – speeding up the cell renewal process, enhancing blood circulation and even fighting with some skin problems such as acne or eczema.

Regardless of the application method, the majority of the essential oils compounds is metabolised and eliminated from our body within hours through the kidneys or other pathways, even though their positive effects last much longer.
